INTERNATIONAL GARDEN SHOW Hamburg

In 2013, Germany’s International Garden Show opened its doors in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Germany. It was situated in the district of Wilhelmsburg, an island on the River Elbe in the south of the city. For the Welt der Kulturen (‘World of Cultures’) section of the show, Planorama developed the design and plantings for two theme gardens, Gartenschmaus and Garten der Symbolik. Each had an area of around 450 square metres and was based on the strategic landscape plan.

GAUMENSCHMAUS
The ‘Garden Feast’ show garden took up the theme of food cultures and cuisines in other countries – aspects that play a role in the discourse around integration. Various types of furniture, and thus also the accompanying ways of eating, were placed on a ‘German living room carpet’. Edible plants, herbs, and vegetables are arranged in large banquet-table planters and complemented by annuals and biennials.

GARTEN DER SYMBOLIK
The ‘Garden of Symbolism’ explores the conditions of individuals and society using simple, everyday components and the processual aspect of planting. The modular arrangement of stacked transport crates, sometime full of plants, generates both compact topographical structures and singular islands. Only pink-flowering plants, which stand in stark contrast to the artificial greens of the crates, are used.
